University City is a name often used for the area of West Philadelphia near University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University. This area is west of the Schuylkill River.
West Philadelphia has a reputation as a dangerous place, and to avoid the bad connotations, people sometimes emphasize the difference between "University City" and the rest of West Philadelphia.
However, if you want to avoid the implication of class separation between the mostly poor, mostly African-American parts of West Philadelphia further from the universities, and the younger, wealthier, whiter groups of people in University City, you can refer to the entire area as West Philadelphia.
