Ubuntu Desktop Edition vs Ubuntu Netbook Edition
Ubuntu Netbook edition no longer exists as an up-to-date release. The graphical user interface has been improved and has become the interface for the standard Ubuntu operating system in version 11.04.
Ubuntu Desktop Edition (also known as "Ubuntu") and Ubuntu Netbook Edition (also known as UNE) are editions of Ubuntu Linux, based on GNOME. Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distribution.
The Netbook edition has been compiled with optimizations for the Intel Atom processor, which is found on most Netbooks. In essence, the Netbook edition should run faster than the desktop edition. In practice, the difference may not be noticeable: while the compiler optimizations may help the processor do its work faster, computer speed is often limited by the speed of the hard drive and the availability of RAM, rather than the processor speed.
UNE also uses a different graphical interface, called "Unity". The installer and several other parts of the user interface for Ubuntu Netbook have been redesigned to accomodate a small screen. This is important
