Talk:Slax vs Ubuntu

From WikiVS, the open comparison website

Something I find interesting is a comparison of a LiveCD distro v. a full desktop distro. Can we say apples and oranges? alisonken1

Removed: Due to its superior in speed Ubuntu is also the better choice if you want to start a start-up company. IMHO this doesn't make any sense for the purpose of wikivs and Slax vs Ubuntu

Bonjour,
I appreciate you've tried to compare these two special distros. Unless you feel so, I won't change
anything in the main page to avoid any trouble. Please, just don't remove this comment as others
could find anything thing interesting in it. I'll defend the "losing" distro as i see it deserving
its share of attention. So here is my opinion about this vs. :
Both distro are based on linux (the kernel) but their purpose is quite different. Like you dress up
according to weather, occasion and some other parameters you've got to take that into consideration.
Slax is a '''LiveCD''' (based on Live scripts from the same author) like puppy, tinycore, slitaz and many others
whereas Ubuntu requires installation in its "normal" use
(well live scripts can turn it into a -huge- live distro).
Slax, as it is built, can boot without any prior installation. Any app you want to use can be collected
from the net (the package is called module) and used right away with no prior installation (just
click on it and it's activated and can then be used the common way).
Yes, Slax, like other live Linuxes, can be installed into any support you may desire (HD, USB, ... or
CD, VM... the limit is your imagination like for any distro).
just for the memo you've got many kinds of possible installation depending on
			your needs and context/constraints :
(BTW you've got to know about you're bootloader -BTL- conf in order to go ahead safely...
				though you've got automated procedures...)
			- frugal : just copy the files from the iso into your partition (even FAT will do), make
then make that partition bootable, point the BTL to the kernel file and you're done...
well almost since you may also have to change some boot cli parameters
(the usual "cheat codes" in order to adjust booting setting...
but you'd have done it anyway:-)
			- traditional : copy the running filesystem into your partition (linux type only) and make it
				bootable (same as frugal)
			- others : a few more ways to save your ass in case of need
+ just put the iso wherever you fell and boot it with grub4dos
+ from whatever OS you're running and without leaving it, just run Slax
from ISO file via your favorite VM that is, e.g., Qemu -my choice for it's small
like Slax-, VMWare -for the biggos who always think big is better because
					same initial letter...-
+ netbooting : will require setting up a server with the correct images and setting and your
client pc to boot from net (pxe and alike)
and, like for the big distros, these LiveCDs (not just slax) have huge support on their home sites
and fan sites (man pages, wikis, fora...) so you can always sort out your probs, come up with
customized conf, reach for the moon.
let dreams be your guide as it's not size that (should) matter(s) but goal (dream) and then ad hoc
design (structure). Under such conditions Slax does serve its purpose beautifully.

Use case, worthy for all the live distros (like the ones i mentionned actually, but not limited to, of
course) , and not (absolutely not) handy with others (be it deb, fed, *ntu and co.) :
		- you want to run a server in less than, say, 10min to be online and serving (http, ftp, whatever)
from a raw PC and don't want to /cannot touch the HD (if any)
		- want to recover from a disaster on an existing (installed) distro : just boot the live and start the rescue
		- want to do a demo, have a show case/kiosque/appliance in no time ( i mean seconds) with no
viral/trojan and alike vulnerability : just boot it and in case u suspect smthg wrong... just reboot
		- want to ssh to home from unknown place, try new package with no risk, chack the PC sanity... boot it again
		- and how about GNS3 and all the simulation environments (cheap, green, efficient even with small HW... old HW!!!)
Hope this can be useful to someone and may you enjoy the force :-)

<re-edit> PS : but, oops, i might have stepped on an ubuntu wasps nest...
i just went around the site and read other pages... dougts are this comment won't
last as it might go again site's policy : "worship the *ntu", or not?
