Talk:FreeBSD vs Linux

From WikiVS, the open comparison website
Jump to: navigation, search

The claim that FreeBSD is 15% faster than Linux on SMP systems originates from FreeBSD developers and refers to MySQL only. It has been disputed by Linux developers who conducted similar benchmarks with MySQL and found that Linux is faster. MySQL developers say that MySQL runs probably faster under Linux because it has been optimized for Linux.

[edit] Poll

I have to wonder -- how many people who voted for Linux in that poll did so just because they use Linux, and don't really know anything about FreeBSD at all? - apotheon 00:04, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Nobody knows. Maybe they wanted to try FreeBSD and found out that it was incompatible with nearly every Hardware they have in there computer and the only help on IRC was "Linux have Hardware problems too"

[edit] Linux? GNU?

Is this here a comparison between the Linux Kernel and the FreeBSD Kernel or between the GNU/Linux Operating System and the FreeBSD Operating System?

If its about the OS, GNU/Linux should be used instead of just "Linux" becease compare a Kernel to an OS is not very clever at all

[edit] Speed rewrite

I deleted the section "Speed" in case of beeing completely useless.

Maybe there should be some real benchmarks. I think this article will be mostly readen by Desktop Users where Linux runs much faster in nearly every Benchmark so a Benchmark of MySQL is relative useless. Especially when there are two Benchmarks and one Benchmark was from slashdot (the fact that it was a Benchmark from slashdot should be enough to delete it)

[edit] Documentation

The Section of Documentation does not loose any word about the Linux Documentations where Documentations exists for nearly every use-case (LFS (Linux From Scratch), Gentoo Wiki, Archlinux Wiki, Ubuntuusers Wiki. A wiki for every kind of users)
