[edit] Creator
PS3 was created by Sony Computer Entertainment and was first released in November of 2006. The XBOX360, is a creation of Microsoft released in November of 2005.
[edit] Features
Both have Wi-Fi capability, yet while the older XBOX360's charged $50USD, it is now free for the new revision of the XBOX360 and has always been free for the PS3. The Wi-Fi capability allows gamers to connect with other gamers globally. PS3 has created a virtual world online and though the XBOX360 is not as extensive, it still allows for great online play, a variety of minigames, and personalized avatars. And while for a time Netflix fans could only enjoy instant play via XBOX360, it has recently allowed for play on the PS3 as well. Overall, the navigation for the PS3 system may be more user-friendly.
[edit] Non-gaming Capabilities
While the PS3 is a hybrid system that can do almost anything, including connecting to other systems and doubling as a blu-ray player, the XBOX360 is strictly a gaming machine. Until March of 2010, the PS3 also allowed installation of a Linux-based operating system, which could be used to run general-purpose desktop computer software.
[edit] Performance
The newest PS3 system is about 33 percent more energy efficient, but was criticized for not having backwards compatibility with the PS2 (all systems have backwards compatibility with the PS). Thanks to the more advanced processor and graphics card, the PS3 performs better visually.
[edit] Appearance
The exterior of the PS3 has a glossy black finish (Piano Black), while the XBOX360's official color is Arctic Chill, a combination of white and gray. The controllers, both wireless, of course look and feel different; the XBOX360 requires batteries to power it and the PS3 controllers are rechargeable.
[edit] Conclusion
PS3 has definitely sharpened their features and lowered their prices since their initial launch, and finally competitively offers more for your money. However, for gamers who are most interested in games rather than extra features, the XBOX360 may be the way to go. Launched a year prior to competing PS3 and Nintendo Wii, the XBOX360 is in the lead (timeline-wise). Project Natal, first announced in June 2009, is projected to release in the summer of 2010, allowing for all XBOX360 users to experience a "controller-free gaming and entertainment experience." The Playstation 3 will be offering technology similar to the Wii console with motion sensor gaming.
