[edit] Launching Programs

Kubuntu's "search and launch" feature gives easy access to a variety of programs which are placed in a few sensible categories, and allows you to search for any file or program by name.

Ubuntu's launcher simply displays icons for a few of the most popular programs, and makes it somewhat more difficult to access any other program.

[edit] Included Software

Both include LibreOffice 3.3. Kubuntu includes Kpackagekit for adding programs, while Ubuntu includes Ubuntu Software Center. Kubuntu includes the Rekonq web browser (based on webkit) while Ubuntu includes Firefox. Both include software for social-networking purposes. Kubuntu integrates this with software that can search for Kubuntu-related help from other Kubuntu users. Both include a variety of tools for other purposes.

[edit] Screen Space

New versions of Ubuntu and Kubuntu are designed to work well on desktop, laptop, and netbook screens. A window that is maximized does not have a separate "title bar" and its application menus are integrated into the operating system's top panel (operating system menu/notification bar). On a netbook, both Ubuntu and Kubuntu by default place the clock, as well as notification widgets for things like battery power and wireless networking, in the right side of the top panel.

[edit] Bugs during Alpha Testing

During the alpha testing cycle, both releases were expected to cause crashes and serious bugs. Kubuntu's wireless networking tool did not allow re-entering of a wireless network password once it had been entered. In order to correct a typo in the password, the computer had to be restarted. Ubuntu, using the brand new Unity user interface, suffered from many crashing programs and failed to recognize a wireless card it had previously recognized.
