Commercial and free support is available for both. One provider of free support for Raiser's Edge is http://www.blackbus.org . Free support for CiviCRM is available at the CiviCRM IRC channel and the CiviCRM forums. Paid Support for CiviCRM is available at http://civicrm.org/professional

CiviCRM is designed to be accessed through a web browser, from any location. Raiser's Edge is intended to be used primarily on a Local Area Network, and large fees may apply for users wishing to access Raiser's Edge via the internet. Users may be able to access Raiser's Edge remotely if using a Virtual Private Network.

CiviCRM is designed to be hosted on a server that runs Apache, MySQL, and PHP. This means it is practical to use with a Windows, Mac, or Linux server. Raiser's Edge requires a Windows server. CiviCRM data and administration tools can be accessed from Windows, Mac, or Linux. A web browser is required. Raiser's Edge client software requires windows and must be installed in order to access a Raiser's Edge database.
