Computer Operating Systems allow a person to install computer software, such as internet browsers and word processing software. They provide a way for software and hardware to work together so that computing tasks of all kinds can be accomplished.

Note that many of the operating system listed here are actually "distributions" of Linux. GNU/Linux is the operating system, but a distribution is a package of supporting tools to "brand" it or cause it to behave in a certain way. Thus, the comparison of, for example, "Ubuntu" vs "Kubuntu" is a comparison of features of different distributions rather than of different operating systems.
