Blu-ray vs HD DVD

Both Blu-ray and HD DVD are media formats that can contain more information than modern DVD discs. The information capacity is what enables these media formats to feature movies in HD quality.

As of Q1 2010, HD-DVD has been fully discontinued in favor of Blu-ray.

Blu-ray was developed by Sony, while HD DVD was developed by Toshiba.

Blu-ray came-out on top, with HD-DVD no longer supported by any major manufacturer or distributor.

Blu-ray discs can store more data than HD DVD discs: 50 GB vs 20 GB.

Both Blu-ray and HD DVD use similar technologies for reading discs. In particular, both use a blue laser that has a higher frequency than regular DVD lasers.

Sony's PS3 supports Blu-ray. Contrary to original rumors, Microsoft's XBox 360 does not support HD-DVD, although an official add-on player was available for a time.
