[edit] Search Results

Search results are the determining factor of a search engine's value. Google grew to dominate the search engine market because of its accuracy compared to other search engines in the past.

[edit] Accuracy

Accuracy for natural language searches is very subjective. Simple terms generate similar results in both Bing and Google. Bing has been lauded for good natural language searches [1]. However, Google has much better results when searching for technical or literal terms. This is probably due to its breadth of indexed pages.

[edit] Breadth

Google indexes more pages than Bing, probably due to its longer uptime.

[edit] Technology

Google uses the patented PageRank system that ranks not only content but link references to determine relevance to a search term.

[edit] Features

Bing and Google have many features that enhance the search experience. Most features in Bing are meant to provide convenience and quick information, whereas Google features are meant to make search results more accurate.

[edit] Sidebar

Bing has a convenient side bar that gives smart internal exploration links, related searches, and search history. Google does not have such a side bar, but has an optional options bar that allows you to configure your search options (such as time) for power searching.

[edit] Promote/Remove

Google allows signed in users to promote and remove search listings from a result page. This enhances search results for the user and customizes the search algorithm to more closely match the user's preferences.

[edit] Image search

Both Bing and Google provide image searching.

[edit] Market Share

Google is the most popular search engine by far. Estimates put Google's market share at 85% while Bing's market share is a bit over 3%, trailing behind Baidu and Yahoo.

[edit] Origins

Google started as a project in a basement and gained popularity for its accurate search results.

Bing started as a search engine alternative by Microsoft, specifically aimed at competing in the search engine market share. Bing is a replacement of Microsoft Live Search.
