Avidemux and PiTiVi are free, open source video-editing programs. In some instances, they can be used as replacements for expensive proprietary video-editing software. Both will function on low-cost computer equipment such as an Asus eeePC.

[edit] Compatibility

Avidemux works on Windows, Mac, and Linux. PiTiVi works on linux-compatible systems only.

[edit] Editing Interface

PiTiVi features a sleek editing interface where clips can be dragged and dropped for editing purposes. Avidemux is considered a powerful tool for advanced users but its interface may not be convenient for those who do not have any experience with Avidemux.

[edit] Exporting failure without error message

In testing, PiTiVi has shown problems of failure to export a video file, without producing an error message, when attempts are made to save files using proprietary file formats such as FLV (flash video). Using the free "ogg" file format, this problem did not occur. Exporting is the only way to create video files which can be viewed outside of PiTiVi.

This problem does not occur in Avidemux.

[edit] Separating Sound from Video

PiTiVi allows splitting of video and audio tracks from a single video file. This useful editing capability is not provided by Avidemux (so that to include the audio from a file, you would have to include its video as well.)
