Arch Linux and Sabayon are popular distributions that cater to experienced Linux users. They typically appeal to users who want a distribution that is customizable and provides fast performance.

[edit] New Software

Arch Linux usually provides the newest versions of most software packages in its repository.

Sabayon is a bleeding edge distro and packages are updated quickly.

[edit] Compiling Software

Sabayon user can use two package managers: portage (inherited from Gentoo), which downloads and compiles source code, and Entropy, which downloads pre-built binary packages.

Arch Linux provides both binary packages as well as a build plan (called PKGBUILD) where you can build any package from source using the ABS (Arch Build System)

[edit] Note

You may also look at Calculate Linux, that provides mostly stable or near-stable software in binary form, while allowing using emerge to get software not available in binary form. Calculate is known to provide much cleaner, more sane, much more closer to original Gentoo way, unlike Sabayon, as it has own repository and only few own or modified packages.

World upgrades, kernel recompilations are not problems with Calculate.
