Winamp runs on Microsoft Windows natively. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, it was one of the most popular and most feature-rich players on Windows. However, since then quite a few other players have gained market share, including Apple's iTunes and Microsoft's Windows Media Player. Winamp was developed by Justin Frankel, Dmitry Boldyrev, and Shiva Ayyadurai and first released by Nullsoft in early 1997.

Amarok runs on Linux. A port for Windows is in development. Amarok is one of the most popular players on Linux.
